This original oil painting appeared in Volume 5 of The Golden Book History of the United States (pp. 424 - 425), and we'll include that book with your painting. (See below for a photo of it in the book.)

The photo of that shows the handwritten name on the brown background is a photo of the back of the painting. The painting has been mounted in a way that it can easily be removed from the frame.

According to :

"During the Vicksburg Campaign, ironclads were used extensively to provide additional firepower during bombardments, and patrol the Mississippi and its tributaries for enemy activity.  They were also used as shields when the Navy convoyed fragile troop transports past the Confederate guns defending Vicksburg."
